KAHEKILI HIGHWAY, MAUI, HAWAII
It is narrow, it is twisty and at some points it can be dangerously close to the edge. But all this is worth the risk, because the road features unparalleld views, like no other in Maui.
It is located in the Western region of Maui, just 25 min west of Maui’s main Kahului airport. Start the road trip early and have enough time to finish before the sunset.
IAO VALLEY STATE MONUMENT PARK
You can explore Iao Needle State Monument Park, before starting on Kahekili Hwy. It’s 15-20 min out of the way. Iao needle is a 2250 ft high peak. It is known as the phallic stone of Kanaloa, Hawaiian God of the Ocean.
The park has paid parking, which is not big and can be quite busy. You also have the option to park along the road, if you don’t mind walking. The pathways are well built and well maintained. There are steps, which lead to the scenic view point, from where you can have a glimpse of the Iao Needle from up close. You will find many small trails around the area. Public facilities are also available.
NAKALELE BLOWHOLE & HEART SHAPED ROCK
40-45 min drive NW on Kahekili Hwy will take you to Maui’s Blowhole & Heart Shaped Rock similar to the popular Spouting Horn blowhole in Kauai. The Nakalele blowhole is situated almost at the end of Kahekili Hwy.
Enjoy the ocean and the surroundings. Hike carefully on the jagged rocks. Try to catch the rainbow formed by the blowhole.
